According to the Department of Health's 2020-22 Population Health Survey, over half of Hong Kong's adult population is overweight or obese! The Government recently launched the first-ever 'Weight Management Action Plan', which is the first cross-bureau blueprint for weight management, promoting holistic weight management across the city. The theme of the first year of the Action Plan is 'Raising Awareness'. Starting from March 21, citizens can participate in the 'Daily Walk Challenge' through the 'e+Living' health challenge platform of 'Haalth', and a themed carnival will be held in West Kowloon on March 21, with free admission and useful tips through fun health games.
In response to the National deployment of the 'Weight Management Year' and the World Health Organization (WHO)'s 'Global Action Plan on Patient Safety', the Government introduced Hong Kong's first-ever 'Weight Management Action Plan' (the 'Action Plan'), proposing five guidelines and uniting efforts from multiple policy bureaus and departments to promote holistic weight management across Hong Kong with collaboration between Chinese and Western medicine.
The three-year 'Action Plan' sets different themes for each year, including 'Raising Awareness', 'Active Change', and 'Making it a Sustained Part of Life', implementing the five guidelines and 15 specific goals in a systematic and progressive manner.
According to the WHO's Western Pacific Region's recommendations for Asian adults, adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 23 and under 25 are considered overweight, while those with a BMI of 25 or above are obese. The Department of Health's 2020-22 Population Health Survey revealed that over half of Hong Kong's adult population is overweight or obese.
Obesity is a risk factor for various non-communicable diseases, including 'Three Highs' (diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia), stroke, and common cancers. Studies show that overweight women have nearly three times the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to the general population, while overweight men have nearly double the risk. Additionally, being overweight is significantly associated with other conditions such as arthritis and chronic back pain.
How can citizens participate in the 'Action Plan'? The theme of the first year of the 'Action Plan' is 'Raising Awareness'. Starting from March 21, citizens are encouraged to explore various unique routes and incorporate physical activity into their lives through the 'e+Living' health challenge platform of 'Haalth'.
On March 21, the West Kowloon Cultural District Art Park will host the 'Weight Management x Daily Walk Challenge' Launch Ceremony and Carnival on the West Lawn of the Art Park Waterfront. Suitable for all ages, the event will feature health games, practical tips, and interactive experiences. Admission is free, and the event will take place from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
